Jacob's Village

Leisure and Recreation

Our residents here at Jacob’s Village are encouraged to maintain a balanced life style that includes time for recreation and leisure. Staff helps them select and perform enjoyable leisure-time activities, both on- and off-campus. Community volunteers also visit regularly to lead residents in recreational pursuits.

Every season abounds with leisure activities. Residents enjoy picnics in the gazebo, puzzle books, trips to the circus when it comes to town, get-togethers with families and friends, meetings of the Red Hat Society, birthday parties, sing-alongs, campfires, comedy skits, attending local college basketball games and minor league baseball games, and much more.

One resident, Mike, finds his greatest satisfaction in gardening, an activity he has loved since childhood. Thanks to donors who supply his seeds, Mike spends his summers cultivating a 10’ x 40’ bonanza of cucumbers, cabbage, beans, peppers, squash and other veggie treats. “People think I have a green thumb, but my real secret is coffee grounds,” Mike admits with a sly grin. Whatever the source of his success, his fellow residents certainly appreciate Mike’s generous sharing of his tasty produce.

Whether residents are involved as participants or spectators, the goals of their recreational and leisure activities are to relax and have fun – and they are achieving those objectives very well.
